NEPTUNE
Canada Study
The
Canadian NEPTUNE Participation study is being led by the Institute
for Pacific Ocean Science and Technology, with support from the Department
of Fisheries and Oceans, Department of National Defense, Natural Sciences
and Engineering Research Council, and the Information, Science and Technology
Agency of British Columbia.
The objectives of this study are to:
- Identify Canadian interests in NEPTUNE
for several communities: Scientific,
Education and Public Awareness, Industrial, Engineering, Emergency Response
Applications, Policy and Government.
- In each community, identify benefits of
Canadian participation.
- Develop options for Canadian participation
in management and use of NEPTUNE, cooperatively with the US team
- Identify steps necessary to carry out
a Canadian NEPTUNE Project.
- Prepare, with the U.S. team, an accurate
budget for subsequent phases of NEPTUNE.
- Review alternative sources and approaches
to funding.
The Canadian study will build on the US process,
and will not repeat the technical feasibility or overall cost studies.
The plan for the study is to:
- Gather preliminary data on information
and benefits to the Canadian scientific and educational communities
through contacts and the wide dissemination of a call for expressions
of interest, e.g. through this document.
- Prepare summaries of expressed interests,
provide feedback to potential participants and pass information on requirements
on to engineering companies and potential Canadian suppliers
- Gather preliminary information on interest
among potential Canadian scientific and equipment suppliers, and prepare
summaries for feedback.
- Conduct a workshop with members of the
scientific, educational and industrial communities (Victoria, February-March
2000) with the following objectives:
- Identifying and documenting opportunities
for synergy between the various communities,
- Reviewing and refining priorities
for Canadian participation in NEPTUNE,
- Establishing a framework for ongoing
planning and implementation of Canadian participation.
- With the US group, develop options for
Canadian participation in the management and operation.
- Develop credible cost estimate for Canadian
science and related development
- Prepare a report including a preliminary
plan for implementing Canadian participation in NEPTUNE
A Canadian
NEPTUNE Management Board has been established to oversee the project.
Science, Industry and Education Committees report to the board.
The Project Manager is Dr. John Madden.
