Workshops to prepare for allocation of $13 million available
for community instruments
NEPTUNE Canada funding includes a total of $13M for an initial
suite of Observing Systems to support the proposed Canadian
research. These will be chosen through a new process involving
competitive, peerreviewed proposals. They will be guided by,
but not be restricted to, the examples used in the NEPTUNE
Canada proposals to CFI and BCKDF.
Two workshops were held in the Fall 2004 to:
- communicate the status and schedule for installation of
NEPTUNE North (the Canadian portion of the NEPTUNE observatory
facility) and the process for allocating the $13M available
for the observing sensors/systems/vehicles
- design specific community scientific experiments for each
science theme
- establish requirements and estimate costs for observing
systems/sensor arrays/vehicles, and
- plan specific locations for NEPTUNE North observatory
nodes (approx. 6-10) and assess options and practical constraints
on those locations.
NEPTUNE Canada funding is in place. We are entering the installation
phase. To "get it right" we need the participation and ideas
of everyone who wants to use the system.
Anyone with research interests in the NEPTUNE Northern loop,
or involved in community experiments, was most welcome to
attend the workshops.
NEPTUNE Canada provided some travel funding to help ensure
the widest possible participation, but this support was restricted
to those affiliated with Canadian institutions. Some US funding
assistance was provided to cover with travel costs for qualified
US participants.
Formal proposals for these observing systems were required
by January 5, 2005. After external review, the systems selected
for NEPTUNE Canada funding should be announced in May 2005
(subject to revision).
External Workshops
A Working
Meeting for Respondents to ORION Request for Assistance/Call
for Conceptual Proposals will be held at Skamania Lodge
near Portland, Oregon on April 14-15, 2005.
An NSF SENSORS Workshop (MARS
Instrument Software Infrastructure) sponsored by the ORION
program office was held at MBARI September 13-15, 2004.
