NEPTUNE Leadership

Between 2000-2003, the NEPTUNE Executive Team managed the bi-national partnership between US and Canada for the concept design and installation planning of the NEPTUNE regional cabled ocean observatory.  The planning structure changed in fall 2003 with NEPTUNE Canada being awarded funding for NEPTUNE Stage 1 and US responsibilities being assigned to the new ORION Program Office for the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) formed by the National Science Foundation.  UVic and NSF signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2004 for the bi-national development of the NEPTUNE regional cabled observatory.  In 2007, ORION will establish Implementing Organizations for the Regional Cabled Observatory and Cyberinfrastructure components of OOI and new cooperation agreements are expected to be established with NEPTUNE Canada.
