PROJECT SUMMARY

NEPTUNE Canada is a $63M project to establish an innovative, regional, cabled observatory system with several subsea scientific observatories in the deep sea off the BC coast. The endeavour is part of the $300M binational NEPTUNE project, in which US partners include the University of Washington, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

The Canadian contribution to the project is made possible by funding from Canadian Foundation for Innovation and BC Knowledge Development Funds. The goal is to utilise the recent advancements in fibre optic communication technology to enable scientists on shore to probe the mysteries of the deep ocean, and allow the world to share in the incredible discoveries. The development of powered, fibre-optic cabled observatories covering a wide range of marine environments will allow, for the first time, real-time observations that will establish a comprehensive interactive database and decadal time-series.

RESPONSIBILITY

As a member of the NEPTUNE Canada DMAS development team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, implementation, administration, management, maintenance and ongoing support of all
operating systems, communications systems and applications systems including hardware, software as well as networking components necessary to develop the NEPTUNE Data Management and Archiving System.

Duties will also include conducting systems analysis, design and development, completing systems integration, investigating hardware, software, data communications, and service innovations for user suitability.

Other duties may include analyzing project objectives and scope, and estimating costs and staffing requirements, developing project work plans, monitoring and directing the activities of other team members and providing an expert level of consulting and training services by maintaining current knowledge of new developments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Initially, the work will consist in setting up and maintaining a "scale model" of the Observatory system: Prototype DMAS. The prototype will consist of all the hardware and software necessary to emulate the instruments, the Observatory adapters and nodes as well as the shore station and archive centre. After a few months of development, it is expected that the newly implemented functions of the system will be gradually made available to the VENUS project, which will be entering its operational phase in Q1 2005.

The successful applicant is also expected to perform basic desktop maintenance in support of other members of the NEPTUNE Canada team.

In details, the duties will include:

  • Assemble the necessary hardware for the prototype DMAS, including computer racks, rack-mounted equipment, cabling and peripherals of various types.
  • Install the necessary operating system software components on the computers, including OS and standard tools such as compilers and other utilities etc.
  • Install and perform the basic administration tasks of the Sybase RDMS that will be supporting the prototype system
  • Install and configure a firewall, routing tables to a private network and generally support and maintain the network environment
  • Install, configure and maintain hard disk arrays
  • Performing systems integration (with possible upgrades and enhancements wrt the prototype) for the VENUS operational setup
  • Support an operational computer environment, with operational staff
  • Manage the systems in use so as to ensure maximum availability using pro-active measures, using appropriate monitoring and remote control technologies
  • Support the desktops systems (MS Windows and Mac OS X) of about 10 staff through the use of a file server and an application server
  • Support the project by conducting hardware, software and data communication systems analysis, making recommendations on new technologies potentially of interest to the project
  • In the process of building the operational DMAS, help the management by providing expert advice in what concerns implementation costs and staffing requirements
  • Participate in the training and supervision of operations staff

JOB KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

The duties will require a minimum of 6 years of experience in the following areas:

  • Copper and fibre-based networks
  • IP networking
  • Cisco networking equipment installation and configuration
  • Linux and Sun Solaris system administration, with special emphasis on:
    • networking configuration, in-host routing between different subnets,
    • firewalls,
    • Apache web server installation, configuration and maintenance,
    • software RAID implementation, and
    • FC disk system

The knowledge of scripting languages such as the Bourne shell, Perl and/or Python is necessary.

Explicit knowledge of the basic administration of relational database management systems such as Sybase, Oracle, Informix or MSQL would be considered a definite advantage.

Knowledge of Windows PC management and networking is also important.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and several years of closely related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Essential qualifications include excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills as well as a strong technical background in relevant technologies.

PROFILE OF THE PERSON

The successful applicant will have the ability to make technical decisions and recommendations to users and supervisory personnel and is expected to perform his duties within a growing team, therefore a good team spirit together with professional work practices, in particular where hardware installation is concerned, is required.

REPORTING LINE

The successful candidate will report to the Assistant Director, Information Technology, with work assigned on a project basis or in an area of continuing responsibility, which will be reviewed for progress toward the stated objectives. He/She may eventually have to supervise or provide technical direction to more junior analysts or specialists also assigned to those projects.
