NEPTUNE Canada

Locations

NEPTUNE Canada’s backbone cable delivers power, Internet access and accurate time to five (possibly six) nodes, from which the network extends via junction boxes to a wide range of instruments. Locations and community experiments were selected after much debate and review to address the key scientific questions within the major research themes for this project.

The NEPTUNE Canada network includes five instrumented locations at:

  1. Folger Passage (inshore shelf)
  2. ODP 889 (continental slope subduction zone)
  3. Barkley Canyon (continental slope subduction zone)
  4. ODP 1027 (mid-plate abyssal plain)
  5. Endeavour Ridge (ocean spreading centre)

A sixth location will be established at Middle Valley (sedimented portion of the Juan de Fuca Ridge) if further supplementary funding can be secured.
