Education and Outreach

"I knew that even in the clearest waters the solar rays could not penetrate further. And accordingly the darkness deepened. At ten paces not an object was visible. I was groping my way, when I suddenly saw a brilliant white light. Captain Nemo had just put his electric apparatus into use..."
—Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea

Instruments
ROPOS's measurement lasers probe a seafloor community.

The deep ocean, like outer space, represents the vast unknown; its mere presence fuels our imagination. By sharing the exploration and scientific discovery of this inaccessible world, NEPTUNE Canada will inspire scientists and explorers of all ages. Our observatory offers rich educational possibilities for students at all levels. Live data and imagery will be useful and accessible to classrooms, laboratories and living rooms world-wide.

NEPTUNE Canada's education and outreach will eventually include:

  • K-12 lesson plans, curricula and learning activities
  • exhibits for science museums
  • resources for undergraduate and graduate research

Making information accessible

Internet connectivity makes it possible for classrooms to participate as virtual explorers in the deep-sea environment. Our observatory and connected website will give access to:

  • real-time data including streaming high-definition video
  • some access to interactive experiments
  • interpreted findings
  • observatory news, operations highlights, and rich media learning resources
  • an online clearinghouse for creating and sharing related educational materials like lesson plans
